J.S. Chase: Wordsmith...

from Coast Trails

Chase didn't restrict his vocabulary, and on the occasion used words I
was unfamiliar with, till I looked them up. Another treat in reading
Chase; expanding your vocabulary. In the following he makes
use of the word chevied, meaning ' a pursuit, ' or ' to chase. '
( No pun intended! ) Here Chase is describing the life he
observed in Aliso Canyon.

" A hawk chevied by kingbirds, like a Spanish
galleon beset by pirates, drifted and flapped
about in misery, a fine moral spectacle of
poetic justice. "

*** field note: today in the same canyon, but further inland
where Chase noted the above, I saw play out before
me, a lone Kingbird chase a Falcon off. The falcon
was most certainly chevied, as he moved on to less
challenging territory. And, so did he flap about in
misery as the Kingbird honed in on him. Chase
depicted this perfectly!
