Chase's imagination here is transcendent. He conjures up a new way to see, 

" The wayward water.." that we know simply as a river, but henceforth

will see much more.

" The wayward water every moment changes its mood, now plunging in bursts of hissing spray,

   now circling in pools where you wonder whether some slender naiad has not slipped under

   the rocking water at your approach, and fancy that it is the lifting and spreading of her hair

   that makes the misty gloom in the emerald depths. "
